Meet Dixie Newman. She is the owner of the Jacked-up Coffee Bar. Dixie came up with the name because she wanted something that was fun and catchy, and something that went with coffee. She likes her coffee extremely strong and all the espresso drinks in the coffee shops are double shots so that’s the name jacked up like jacked up on caffeine. And she can also add liquor to the drinks which jacks it up another notch! Dixie is currently the Council member for Ward 3 at the City of Biloxi and has been since 2013.
Thank you, Dixie, for your love for Biloxi and for serving a great cup of coffee!
Q: What inspired you or led you to your current career?
A: I was 27, I just got back home from New York City after Hurricane Katrina. I really didn’t know what I was getting myself into when I ran for City Council – all I want is to help Biloxi. Biloxi was a premier city at one time, but we are no longer. Katrina made that a reality. There have been some unique challenges and some obstacles but overall, I have had a hand in improving Biloxi.
As for Jacked up Coffee Bar, my dad has a building here that he bought after Katrina, my mom decided to open an antique store and her partner left so I stepped up to help her. My mom has fantastic taste, she has a lot of pieces over there from the 1800s, it’s gorgeous but it’s a tough business here. Then, what else could we do down here that could help rebuild this area? So, I said a coffee shop. I love coffee, I love going to independent coffee shops in other states and then I just took it over and started July 2018.
Q: What is your favorite restaurant in Biloxi?
A: Half Shell
