Mortgage Rates Rise for the First Time in Weeks

July 23, 2020 Freddie Mac (OTCQB: FMCC) today released the results of its Primary Mortgage Market Survey® (PMMS®), showing that the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage (FRM) averaged 3.01 percent.

“While housing demand continues to rebound, the month-long swoon in economic activity has caused the 10-year Treasury benchmark to drop. In the short-term, this means the demand will continue on the back of near record low mortgage rates,” said Sam Khater, Freddie Mac’s Chief Economist. “However, the most recent consumer spending data has been pointing to slow growth since mid-June. The concern is that the pause in economic activity will cause unemployment to remain elevated which will lead to longer-term labor market distress.”

TheFacesofBiloxi.com  is a community project to get to know people in Biloxi one smiling face at a time.  This week we feature Dixie Newman of Jacked Up Coffee.  Here is a sneak peek at our interview.

Alternate text

Meet Dixie Newman. She is the owner of the Jacked-up Coffee Bar. Dixie came up with the name because she wanted something that was fun and catchy, and something that went with coffee. She likes her coffee extremely strong and all the espresso drinks in the coffee shops are double shots so that’s the name jacked up like jacked up on caffeine. And she can also add liquor to the drinks which jacks it up another notch!  Dixie is currently the Council member for Ward 3 at the City of Biloxi and has been since 2013.
Thank you, Dixie, for your love for Biloxi and for serving a great cup of coffee!

Q: What inspired you or led you to your current career?
A: I was 27, I just got back home from New York City after Hurricane Katrina. I really didn’t know what I was getting myself into when I ran for City Council – all I want is to help Biloxi. Biloxi was a premier city at one time, but we are no longer. Katrina made that a reality. There have been some unique challenges and some obstacles but overall, I have had a hand in improving Biloxi.
As for Jacked up Coffee Bar, my dad has a building here that he bought after Katrina, my mom decided to open an antique store and her partner left so I stepped up to help her. My mom has fantastic taste, she has a lot of pieces over there from the 1800s, it’s gorgeous but it’s a tough business here. Then, what else could we do down here that could help rebuild this area? So, I said a coffee shop. I love coffee, I love going to independent coffee shops in other states and then I just took it over and started July 2018.

Q: What is your favorite restaurant in Biloxi?
A: Half Shell

July 02, 2020 Freddie-Mac  released the results of its Primary Mortgage Market Survey®, showing that the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage (FRM) averaged 3.07 percent, the lowest rate in the survey’s history dating back to 1971.

“Mortgage rates continue to slowly drift downward with a distinct possibility that the average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage could dip below 3 percent later this year,” said Sam Khater, Freddie Mac’s Chief Economist.

TheFacesofBiloxi.com  is a community project to get to know people in Biloxi one smiling face at a time.  This week we feature Chuck Lamey  of Pop's Pizzeria.  Here is a sneak peek at our interview.

Alternate text

Meet Chuck Lamey. He is the owner of Pop’s Pizzeria, a family restaurant in Biloxi. He’s been in the pizza business for most of his life.

Thank you, Chuck, for serving scrumptious pizza and your love for Biloxi.

Q: What inspired you or led you to your current career?
A: I’ve been in the pizza business for most of my life here. In high school, I had a part-time job in a pizza place in the neighborhood and later on, I worked for Pizza Hut for about 20 years as an Area Supervisor. I left to do different things and didn’t think I would ever go into the restaurant business myself. But one day I just happened to see this location here and thought a pizzeria would be perfect on this corner. And it has turned out really well.

Q: What is your favorite restaurant in Biloxi?
A: Outback Steakhouse. My wife and I go there probably once a week.

Q: How long have you lived or worked in Biloxi?
A: I grew up in Biloxi, I have lived here all my life.

Mortgage Rates Tick Up Slightly

June 4, 2020 Freddie Mac today released the results of its Primary Mortgage Market Survey®, showing that the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage (FRM) averaged 3.18 percent.

“While the economy is slowly rebounding, all signs continue to point to a solid recovery in home sales activity heading into the summer as prospective buyers jump back into the market. Low mortgage rates are a key factor in this recovery,” said Sam Khater, Freddie Mac’s Chief Economist. “While homebuyer demand is up and has been broad-based across most geographies, supply has been slower to improve. In fact, the gap between supply and demand has widened even further than the large gap that existed prior to the pandemic.”

TheFacesofBiloxi.com  is a community project to get to know people in Biloxi one smiling face at a time.  This week we feature Andrea Borst of The Dixie Gypsy.  Here is a sneak peek at our interview.

Alternate text

Andrea Borst is the owner of Dixie Gypsy, a clothing and accessory boutique inside Re-Do Vendor Mall.  Andrea lived in Biloxi until she was twelve and then she moved to Texas. She grew up, married and had two sons in Texas but she always yearned for the Mississippi Gulf Coast where she had spent her early years and numerous vacations. Ten years ago, she and her husband decided it was time to bring the family to Biloxi and make it their forever home.  Many of you may know Andrea as the manager of your Mama’z House, a bar and grill on the Tchoutacabouffa River.    We recently caught up with Andrea and asked her about her love for this area.

Q: What inspired or led you to your current venture?
A: I started working at Hancock Fabrics in high school.  I loved helping the customers choose the fabrics for their projects.  One of my teachers was getting married and she came in to get some ideas for her wedding dress.  I ended up designing the dress – we are still friends today. In Texas, I had a business called Aunnie’s Tees and More making and selling custom shirts and accessories.  I have always had my hand in design.  After moving to Biloxi in 2009 I helped my mom open Your Mama’z House and until this year I have been spending all my time managing that business.  This year, when the Re-do Vendor Mall opened, I decided it was a chance to get back into the fashion business and sell good trendy clothing for a reasonable price.  The Re-do Vendor gives me the opportunity to sell my lines of clothing and accessories without being there full time.  They handle everything but the merchandising.  The business has been doing really well.

Q: What is your favorite restaurant in Biloxi, and what do you love there?
A: Half Shell – everything!
